Bedsores

What are bedsores?

A bedsore is an ulcer or an area of reddened, sore skin that occurs on the buttocks, heels and elbows of immobilised patients after a prolonged time in bed. The cause is continual pressure on the area, which restricts blood supply.

Inflamed skin on the buttocks of elderly incontinent patients and under the breasts of obese patients can become infected with candida albicans, causing thrush.

What can you do about bedsores?

Good nursing care is essential to prevent bedsores. Regularly changing the patient’s position will help reduce pressure on particular areas, and gently massaging areas that are under pressure every few hours will improve circulation and lessen the possibility of bed sores or ulcers developing.

Emollient products can help hydrate and condition the skin, and protect it from damage. Avoid soap, which may dry the skin and further irritate.
